Belgian brand GreenPan develops the world’s first PFAS-free non-stick pan

When easy-clean coatings were invented in the 1950s, no one was aware of their impact on the environment and human health, and developed countries such as the United States have yet to publicly disclose that traditional easy-clean coatings release toxic substances when overheated. Belgians Jan Helskens and Wim De Veirman began looking for a new coating that was safe for the human body and the environment as an alternative to traditional coatings. After repeated research and development with researchers, GreenPan was born.


It is understood that the ceramic coating used as a smoke-proof material is resistant to high temperatures and does not emit harmful substances, and repeated experiments have been conducted to see if it can be processed into kitchen utensils. Development requires additional time, from verifying and ensuring quality and safety for humans and the environment, to building appropriate processing facilities and implementing the product.

In 2007, we developed Thermolon™, a proprietary ceramic nonstick coating that contains no harmful PFAS. This innovative news completely overturns the industry value standard that has favored fluororesins since 1958. That’s how GreenPan was born.

How is Thermolon made?

  • Step 1: Sol-gel treatment

    Thermolon uses a method called the sol-gel method to convert mineral materials into a coatable solution. No harmful chemicals (PFAS) are used in the process.

  • Step 2: Coating processing

    When coating, a surfactant-free solution is sprayed and baked, so no adhesives or solvents are required.

  • Step 3: Reduce carbon dioxide emissions

    It cures at lower temperatures and in shorter times. Compared with PTFE (fluororesin) processing and manufacturing, CO2 emissions are reduced by approximately 60% when manufactured using Thermolon.

Security Current Situation and Future

In 2002, the US Environmental Protection Agency issued a directive requiring the complete elimination of the hazardous substance PFOA by 2015. PFOA is a fluorine-containing organic fluorine compound (PFAS). It is a substance used in the production of fluororesin processed products, but it has been pointed out that it has the property of accumulating in the human body. In 2015, major companies in the cookware industry and other industries completely abolished production using PFOA, but since fluororesin processing cannot be done without the use of surfactants, production began using fluorine, a substitute for banned PFOA. However, this replacement substance is actually a harmful substance that belongs to the same class of organofluorinated compounds (PFAS) and continues to be used today.


These organofluorine compounds (PFAS) are released into the environment, but because they are difficult to decompose, they remain in nature for many years, accumulating in soil, rivers and organisms, affecting human health and ecosystems. Certain PFAS substances have become a major problem in Europe and the United States because they can cause cancer of reproductive organs and kidneys and affect hormonal systems.
